Youngsters can sniff out old people?s scent

And it isn?t all that bad

Web edition : 5:13 pm

?Old people smell? is for real ? and it isn?t mothballs, Jean Nat? or pipe tobacco. It?s a mild and not unpleasant odor compared with the intense, unpleasant smell emitted by 40- to 50-something guys, a new study finds.

Scientists don?t know what makes up this vintage chemical fingerprint, but the research suggests that apologies to your grandparents may be in order. The negative association with the smell of the elderly appears to be more about context than scent, says Johan Lundstr?m of the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia.

Lundstr?m and his colleagues collected underarm odors from 12 to 16 people in each of three age groups: young (20 to 30 years old), middle-aged (45 to 55 years old) and old (75 to 95 years old). For five nights while they slept, the study participants wore T-shirts with breast-feeding pads sewn in the underarms. The shirts and bed linens had been washed with scent-free soap and the participants did the same to themselves before going to bed each night. They also refrained from smoking, drinking alcohol or eating foods that are known to contribute odors to bodily secretions.

Evaluators (aged 20 to 30) then sniffed the armpit pads. Evaluators rated the samples on pleasantness and intensity, guessed which of two odors came from the older donor and then labeled all of the scents by age category. The evaluators had trouble discerning young from middle-aged odors. But the odors from old donors were correctly identified more often than would be expected by chance, the research team reports online May 30 in PLoS ONE.

?These elderly odors were very distinct and easy to group together,? says Lundstr?m. Not only that, but odors from old men were rated most pleasant, especially compared to middle-aged men. (Middle-aged woman odors were rated more pleasant than elderly woman odors.)

And descriptions of the elderly odors weren?t negative: Evaluators used phrases such as ?earthy? or ?mild, like stale water,? Lundstr?m says.

?Everything changes with age, so it?s not a huge surprise,? says Dustin Penn, who heads the Konrad Lorenz Institute of Ethology in Vienna and has investigated how scents are involved in mating among people and other animals.

The possible mechanisms behind the bodily bouquets are most intriguing, he says. Perhaps the drop in testosterone that occurs in old age makes the older scents discernible. Work by Penn and others suggests that an individual?s microflora ? the personal mix of bodily bacteria that can?t be scrubbed away ? also contributes to Eau de You.?

The study is also interesting because it reveals that our noses know more than we know. ?In many ways we are pathetic compared to dogs and other animals. But that doesn?t mean we aren?t getting any information,? Penn says. ?We don?t seem to be aware of what we can do.?

Small Business Inspiration: A Quote From Ernest Hemingway ...

?

?Man is not made for defeat. ?A man can be destroyed but not defeated.??

Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea

?

This quote from Ernest Hemingway?resonated with me for two reasons:

1) It reminded me of Howard Roark, the protagonist in Ayn Rand?s The Fountainhead. ?Roark was a modern architect that struggled in obscurity, professional criticism and sabotage as well as romantic heartbreak, but whose human character, integrity and independent-mindness prevails in the end. ?The Fountainhead is an amazing book that every entrepreneur and small business owner should read.

2) Doesn?t this quote capture perfectly what being an entrepreneur and small business owner is all about? ?For every step forward, we encounter roadblocks, twists or turns that take us a few steps backward. ?That might mean pivoting our business model 90, 180 or 360 degrees. ?That might mean struggling day-by-day to make payroll and pay our suppliers. ?That may even mean shutting the business down, which just might destroy us. ?But our human spirit will persist as it is not made for defeat.

Icebreaker:?What quotes or other works of literature inspire you as an entrepreneur or small business owner?

Syria massacre unlikely to break U.N. deadlock

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A massacre in the Syrian town of Houla has sparked international outrage but is unlikely to break a year-long impasse on the U.N. Security Council between Syria's ally Russia and Western powers calling for President Bashar al-Assad's ouster.

The massacre was among the worst carnage of the 14-month uprising against Assad's government, which began as peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations but has become increasingly militarized, with signs that battled-hardened Islamist militants have come from abroad to join the fight against Assad using trademark tactics like suicide bombings.

At least seven Western nations expelled Syrian envoys from their capitals on Tuesday in a coordinated action against Damascus spurred by revulsion over the killing of more than 100 civilians in Houla, including many children.

But such moves are largely symbolic. In New York, where the United States and its European allies have tried in vain since last year to persuade Russia and China to back sanctions against Damascus, the 15-nation Security Council remains deeply split.

"There are no signs Russia and China are ready to support tougher steps at the U.N., despite what happened in Houla," a council diplomat told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Russia and China vetoed two resolutions that condemned Damascus for the bloodshed, though they recently joined the rest of the council in approving the deployment of unarmed military observers and backing international mediator Kofi Annan's peace plan. The Annan plan has so far failed to stop the violence.

What would change Russia's views and the dynamics on the council in favor of tougher action against Damascus and Assad? According to David Bosco of American University in Washington, the impasse on the council will be in place as long as Assad is able to fend off efforts to topple his government.

"The council dynamics likely won't shift until the dynamics of the Syria conflict itself shift," he said. "As long as the government has a reasonable chance of holding onto power, I'd expect Russia and China to oppose aggressive measures to weaken the regime's power."

GAME CHANGER?

Russia supported a non-binding U.N. Security Council statement on Sunday that condemned the massacre "in the strongest possible terms" and criticized the government for using heavy weapons against population centers, while simultaneously calling on all sides to end the violence.

The unanimously approved statement also said the massacre might constitute a violation of international law.

Western powers clearly hoped that the horrific nature of Houla would persuade Moscow and Beijing to sanction Syria. Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told reporters in New York on Tuesday that he and other delegates raised the Houla massacre again during a closed-door council meeting.

"Most Security Council members raised Syria during the discussions just now, including me, making the point that the current situation was not sustainable, that more than 12,000 people had been killed, the massacre at Houla is seen by many in the region, and more widely, as a game changer," he said.

He said the council was looking ahead to Wednesday's meeting on Syria, at which it will receive a briefing from Annan's deputy Jean-Marie Guehenno on Annan's talks with Assad in Syria.

"We would like to see a proper strategic discussion at that meeting about what the next steps are going to be," he added.

"Next steps" is usually diplomatic code for sanctions.

But Russia does not appear to see Houla as a game changer and continues to blame both sides for the killings at Houla.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking with Annan by phone on Tuesday, urged the government and rebels to stop violence and repeated a call for an investigation into Houla.

Lavrov "expressed deep alarm in connection with the tragedy in Houla and underscored that all Syrian sides should reject violence without delay with the aim of preventing such incidents in the future," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The Syrian government has blamed Islamist militants for the killings in Houla.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin also condemned the "cruel killings" of Houla, comments that marked an intensification of Beijing's condemnation of the bloodshed. But Liu stopped short of directly condemning Assad's government.

On Sunday U.N. officials said it was not yet clear who was responsible for the massacre. But U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous was much less ambiguous when he spoke to reporters in New York on Tuesday.

He said that the army and "shabbiha" militia supporting Assad were "probably" responsible for massacring 108 people with artillery, tanks, small arms and knives.

Despite his "strong suspicions", he said the evidence was less clear about the shabbiha militia's involvement in the close-range killings with knives and small arms. By saying that, he did not definitively clear the rebels of blame.

That lack of clarity gives Russia and China a chance to withhold judgment and leaves the deadlock in place until a full-scale investigation presents irrefutable evidence that the government was to blame - assuming that is what U.N. investigators find.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland welcomed the Russian acceptance of a full investigation and said Washington had no doubt irrefutable evidence will arrive.

"We think it's indisputable what that investigation is going to show," she said. "It is going to show that these were regime sponsored thugs who went into villages, went into homes, and killed children at point blank range and their parents."

So far Annan's six-point peace plan and mediation efforts, as well as the deployment of nearly 300 unarmed U.N. observers, have failed to bring about a truce and launch that political dialogue between the government and opposition aimed at a "political transition" that is the core of Annan's plan.

At the same time, Ladsous made clear that there is no "Plan B" to Annan effort's, which Russia and China strongly support.

"There is no alternative, there is no other game, nobody has come out with any other plan," he said. "This is the one that we support, the one that we work for."

The U.N. observer force's 90-day mandate expires in late July. Diplomats say it is unclear if the council will renew it if the situation in Syria does not improve.

(AP) ? Former Liberian President Charles Taylor was sentenced to 50 years imprisonment Wednesday for arming and supporting murderous rebels in Sierra Leone in return for "blood diamonds," a landmark sentence activists hope will send a clear message to despots around the world that they will be held to account for sponsoring atrocities.

Taylor, wearing a blue suit and gold tie, stood grim-faced and silent as Presiding Judge Richard Lussick of Samoa imposed what will likely amount to a life sentence for the 64 year old.

Lussick said Taylor's position as head of state at the time of his crimes put him in a "class of his own" when judges came to setting the sentence ? one of the longest ever handed down by the Special Court for Sierra Leone or any other international tribunal.

Taylor shipped arms, ammunition and other supplies to rebels in Sierra Leone in return for personal wealth in the form of diamonds mined by slave labor and to gain increasing political clout in the volatile West Africa region.

Taylor's reaction in court Wednesday was in stark contrast to the delight of survivors who gathered in the Sierra Leone capital, Freetown, to watch a live feed of the sentencing .

"That makes me the happiest person on earth," said Alimami Kanu, who was 11 when rebels backed by Taylor hacked off his right hand. He was one of thousands of civilians mutilated during Sierra Leone's decade-long civil war that ended in 2002 with some 50,000 dead.

Human rights activists and international law experts also hailed the tough sentence as a warning shot for war criminals.

"Today's sentence not only reflects the severity of Taylor's crimes but sends a clear message that individuals who aid and abet war crimes can no longer act with impunity," said Patrick Alley, director of Global Witness, a nongovernment group that campaigns to prevent conflicts erupting around exploitation of natural resources such as diamonds and timber.

The sentence came a month after Taylor became the first former head of state since World War II to be convicted by an international court. Judges found him guilty of 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, rape, torture and the use of child soldiers.

"The lives of many more innocent civilians in Sierra Leone were lost or destroyed as a direct result of his actions," Lussick said.

Prosecutors had sought an 80-year sentence and said they are considering appealing.

"It is important in our view that those responsible for criminal misconduct on a massive scale are not given a volume discount," said the U.N.-backed court's chief prosecutor, Brenda Hollis.

Hollis said Taylor's prison term would only provide a measure of closure for victims of one of Africa's most savage conflicts.

"The sentence that was imposed today does not replace amputated limbs. It does not bring back those who were murdered," she said. "It does not heal the wounds of those who were victims of sexual violence and does not remove the permanent emotional and psychological and physical scars of those enslaved or recruited as child soldiers."

Taylor will serve his sentence in a British jail. His lawyers, however, said they will appeal his convictions and that will likely keep him in a jail in The Hague, Netherlands, for months.

Taylor's lead attorney, Courtenay Griffiths, criticized the court for refusing while setting Taylor's sentence to take into account his decision to step down from power following his indictment in 2003. Griffiths said that sends a worrying message against the backdrop of ongoing atrocities allegedly being committed by Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

"What lesson does that send to President Assad?" Griffiths said. "Maybe the lesson is: If you are a sitting leader and the international community wants to get rid of you, either you get murdered like Col. Gadhafi, or you hang on until the bitter end. I'm not so sure that's the signal this court ought to be transmitting at this particular historical juncture."

Griffiths said Africans should use Taylor's conviction as a starting point to campaign for justice for themselves.

"Justice isn't something which Africans should obtain, exported to them from abroad by the white man, the civilizing force," he said.

His comments appeared to be aimed not only at Taylor's trial, but also at the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal, the International Criminal Court, which has been in operation for 10 years and has so far launched prosecutions only in Africa, including in Sudan, Congo, Libya and Ivory Coast.

At a sentencing hearing earlier this month, Taylor expressed "deepest sympathy" for the suffering of victims of atrocities in Sierra Leone, but insisted he had acted to help stabilize the West Africa region and claimed he never knowingly assisted in the commission of crimes.

Judges rejected that argument, saying that while he posed as a peacemaker he was covertly fanning the flames of conflict by arming rebels.

Taylor stepped down and fled into exile in Nigeria after being indicted by the court in 2003. He was finally arrested and sent to the Netherlands in 2006.

While the Sierra Leone court is based in that country's capital, Freetown, Taylor's trial is being staged in Leidschendam, a suburb of The Hague, for fear holding it in West Africa could destabilize the region.

Mark Ellis, the executive director of legal group The International Bar Association, said the verdict and sentence should act as a deterrent ? in time.

"So far in the recent history of these courts doesn't suggest that these courts are a deterrent yet. But that is the hope that eventually they will be," he said.

Dell begins test deployment of ARM-based Copper servers

Back in February, Dell revealed its intentions to enter the ARM server field. Today, the company announced that it is shipping ARM-based Copper servers to a limited number of customers. Copper is lower power than x86 servers, and Dell thinks this makes it a good fit for energy-intensive platforms such as Hadoop. In that same vein, the company views Copper as a cost-effective option that can be used for light workloads and for testing performance. In addition to deploying its new servers to select clients, Dell will be looking to the open source community for help in further developing its ARM system (the platform currently runs Linux). No word on when Copper will move beyond the testing phase.

First look at the face of a woman dead for 2000 years

IMAGINE how Egyptologists must struggle with temptation. Say you are a young archaeologist and you discover an intact mummy. You must yearn to unwrap it, to see what was buried with the body, to learn about who this person was.

For most Egyptologists of the golden era of discovery in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a temptation to which they succumbed. Not so Alexander Rhind, who in 1857, aged 24, discovered what became known as the Rhind mummy in a tomb dating to 10 BC in the ancient city of Thebes. He shipped it home and it resides, intact, at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, UK.

Now its secrets have been revealed thanks to CT scanning and 3D image generation carried out by Edwin van Beek and colleagues at the Clinical Research Imaging Centre in Edinburgh. The mummy was a woman, ethnically Egyptian, 157 centimetres tall and aged between 25 and 29. In her right hand she holds a papyrus scroll thought to contain details of her life. The bandages, daubed in beeswax and pistachio resin for preservation, are set with gold amulets. On her head is a metal cap in the shape of a flying scarab beetle.

Aren't they tempted to open the mummy and retrieve the scroll? No, says van Beek, it will remain intact. "Mummies deteriorate rapidly when opened. But we are looking at performing micro CT scans to see if we can reconstruct the hieroglyphs on the scroll."

We don't know how she died, but in life the mummy was a high-status individual. "Apart from the gold, she has good teeth, indicating that she had a high-quality diet. She was also entombed in a nice sarcophagus."

The Egyptians removed brains before mummification. So for readers puzzled by the apparent presence of a brain in the image of the skull, van Beek says his team reconstructed the brain volume from details found on the inside of the skull.

He was Indiana's head coach from 1966-71, guiding the Hoosiers to a Big Ten co-championship in 1967, and finishing with a 62-60 record. He became a special assistant to the athletic director in 1971, when Indiana hired Bob Knight as coach.

Watson retired in 1987.

An eBook Standards Carol Part 1: Ghosts of Formats Past | Shaggin ...

Hey folks, brace yourselves for a lot of information about the eBook format wars; I?m going to switch hats for the next two posts and write as a technical writer rather than a novelist. I?ll get back to the ghosts and goblins soon, I promise.?This post began with a two-part post over at A List Apart about the state of standardization in the current eBook market and where it might be going, including the need for a standard format that everyone can use. You can read Part One here and Part Two here, then come on back.

I shared the post with JW Manus, as she?s explored quite a bit with formatting eBooks and even taught me some tricks that I didn?t know. I was interested in seeing her take on it (and she is sharing her thoughts in tandem with my own here ? we?re going for complimentary posts here, so please read hers, too, it?s a worthwhile read), but we ended up in a discussion and I realized that I, too, actually have some things to say about the current state of eBooks and format standardization. Here is the drive of my argument, cleaned up just a bit:

?I?ve come to realize that I?m fortunate in some ways, as I?ve been fighting the formatting wars for close to 13 years when creating documentation (I?ve become a style sheet wizard, which helps in HTML transformations, but that?s a hard-fought victory). Standards can definitely be a double-edged sword. Implementation is everything ? MS Word, for example, has some standards, but the implementation is incredibly sloppy. Anyway?he?s right in that we?re becoming a bit more platform agnostic, but everything seems so very patchwork. The most reliable application that I have found for converting Kindle files is an antiquated command-line application. We have to use the ridiculous workarounds that come with translating legacy file formats, and the future is just more of those workarounds if we continue down the same path of everybody following their own paths. This line, in particular, echoes something I?ve written on my blog: ?The publishing landscape of 2012 looks similar to the music landscape of 1998, crossed with the web designs of 1996: it?s encumbered by DRM and proprietary formats, it treats customers as criminals, it?s fragmented across platforms, and it?s hostile to authors who want to distribute their work through independent channels.??

Essentially, I realized that I had lived through so much of the period described above that I should talk some about what that was like, and what I learned. Here?s a bit of my own journey, and how I see things eventually playing out, from the standpoint of a technical writer.

My career journey began in 1995, when I acquired a steady point of access to the Internet via my University?s connection. Sure, I had been on before, using a patchwork combination of friends? Prodigy and AOL accounts (the latter kind of not really qualifying but a mindblowing deal at the time). This was the REAL wild west of the Internet: our browsers didn?t have images unless they were running on high-powered computers, which you almost never saw; our chat was IRC, and while it could be simple to use, it was also very flexible and allowed you to do incredible things ? for yourself or to others; and the quickest way to send files was a shared FTP site. Having your photo online was unthinkable. You get the picture.

I started learning rudimentary HTML at the time, though pretty much all HTML was rudimentary. So few people were creating their websites ?and there were so few browser options that things were opened wide up. Remember, Internet Explorer wouldn?t even debut until the end of the year ?- as if we would ever use that. Your options were either the text-based Lynx, Netscape (formerly Mozilla), Omniweb, and Grail. I only heard of the latter, but never saw them. HTML as a standard was still fairly new, and didn?t have anywhere near the features that it would support in ten years, so you were pretty safe writing a web site in a certain way; browsers would handle HTML in the same fashion. My original site is long-gone, or I would show what I?m talking about. What you need to know is that it was fairly straightforward: these tags did that, and you?re ahead of most of the game if you can italicize words or indent.

Internet Explorer 1.

Internet Explorer is pretty much where that started to go off the rails. This is probably a familiar pattern to most folks ? open standard is established, big company comes along and bastardizes the format into a proprietary format that enables said company to corner a part of the market. Microsoft was bad about this, but are far from the only culprits. Suddenly your HTML might not look the same in Internet Explorer as in Netscape. You had to start customizing your code for certain browsers. You other Internet graybeards will no doubt remember this, along with the ?Optimized for Netscape? disclaimers on sites:

I think you can probably see where I?m going here. The fragmentation just got worse and worse over the years, as new browsers came and went and different companies dug in their heels. Yes, HTML was supposed to be an international standard, but no one could really enforce this. So too, today do we have a myriad of different major eBook formats. Most draw on HTML, but have their own implementations and interpretations of the tags. Here?s just a sampling, though I?m sure you?re familiar with most:

  • ePub
  • eReader (pdb)
  • HTML (yes there are still eBooks that are pure HTML)
  • Kindle (.azw and .kf8, also works with MOBI)
  • Mobipocket (MOBI)
  • Microsoft .lit (LIT)
  • Acrobat (PDF)

And so on. You get the idea. Loads of different formats out there, and no one ?ring to rule them all?. These each have their own advantages and drawbacks, which I?ll talk about in the next post. For now, I think you might have a picture of where the web and HTML lie around the turn of the century: the whole thing was a mess (and we haven?t even talked about things like VRML, Java, or SGML, but we?ll get there soon). The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the international standards organization that governs?well, web standards, saw the need to move the web forward with new features but also an increasing need to have everyone speaking the same language.

Enter XML. We?ll talk some about that in the next entry.
