Audrey Tautou At Cannes: 'I Want To Go To The Darker Side Of Humanity'

CANNES, France ? Actress Audrey Tautou, known for her sweet and light roles in such films as "Amelie," praised the late director Claude Miller as a "bright and passionate" filmmaker who helped her turn in a darker direction in his final film.

The French star plays a husband-poisoner in Miller's "Therese Desqueyroux," which closes the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday at a special screening celebrating the lauded New Wave filmmaker, who died last month of cancer at age 70.

The contemporary of Francois Truffaut, whose large body of work includes 1998's Cannes Jury Prize winner "Class Trip," helped Tautou to take on the role in the adaptation of Francois Mauriac's novel about a frustrated wife who slowly tries to kill her husband with arsenic to get freedom.

The gritty role, and Miller's acuity and patience, helped her unlock her inner dark side.

"It didn't exactly free me, but it did make more want to explore cinema even more," she said, in an interview with The Associated Press, wearing shades on a terrace overlooking the French Riviera. "I really liked the experience... I had to try to not be scared of Therese. I want to go to the darker side of humanity."

The film is set in the French region of Landes, near Bordeaux, where the young, cerebral Therese is forced to marry authoritative Bernard, played by Gilles Lellouche, whom she grows to despise.

The role is a far cry from "Amelie," the touching 2001 story of a shy Parisienne waitress who changes the lives of those around her through eccentric acts of kindness. That role shot her to stardom, but 10 years later, Tautou seized upon her "dream script" as an opportunity to grow up.

"I'm not the same woman I was when I was 22-years-old. I don't feel genuine in young ingenue parts any more. Therese led me to entirely new terrain," said Tautou.

She said Miller's talents remained with him right until he died.

"Claude really gave us a life lesson on the shoot of `Therese.' When you see the film he made ? brilliant and unrelenting ? you think how crazy it is that a film like that could be made with such simplicity," Tautou said.

She recalled her last conversation with Miller in April. "Yes, I remember, yes," she said, with hesitation. "The thing is, right until the end his eyes would sparkle. He was so bright and passionate."

Tautou said she was deeply sad that Miller cannot grace the red carpet with her at the festival, but laughed and remembered something he said just before he succumbed to the illness.

"Ah, we'd talk about movies, about `Therese.' Oh, we'd talk about Cannes! He said when we go to Cannes, we'll have to dress nicely."

Donovan's hat trick leads US over Scotland 5-1

Star's strong game in record 125th international start keys victory in friendly

updated 1:06 a.m. ET May 27, 2012

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Apparently, the desire still burns in Landon Donovan.

Days after wondering publicly how much longer he will have the hunger to play at an elite level, Donovan scored his first international hat trick in five years, leading the Americans over Scotland 5-1 in an exhibition game Saturday night.

As the Americans began a stretch of five games in 18 days, Donovan returned to the U.S. national team following an eight-month absence.

"I don't want to be mistaken for not caring," Donovan said. "I care, and I like being a part of this team. I'm a professional, and I know how to do my job. I've been doing this a long time."

Donovan beat goalkeeper Allan McGregor on the rebound of his own initial shot in the third minute, then added goals in the 60th from a Jermaine Jones layback and in the 65th off a Michael Bradley pass. Donovan raised his career total to 49 goals with his third international hat trick and made an American record 125th international start, one more than the previous mark set by defender Jeff Agoos from 1988-03.

"Tonight was one of those nights when most things went right," Donovan said. "While most goals fell to me, a lot of people did a lot of things right to make that happen."

Donovan scored four goals against Cuba in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July 2003 and had three against El Salvador in a March 2007 exhibition.

The U.S. had won three consecutive games by a score of 1-0, including a victory at Italy, but entered talking of generating offensive firepower as the Americans prepare for World Cup qualifying.

"Now, we have Landon back and he gave us the goals," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "We can't complain tonight."

On the sixth anniversary of his national team debut, Bradley scored on a spectacular 30-yard, right-footed half-volley in the 11th minute. Jones got his second international goal in the 70th off an assist from Donovan, who had skipped eight national team matches in a row because of injuries and commitments to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"Obviously, we were very pleased," Klinsmann said. "I think we set the tone and kept the rhythm through the entire game. Obviously, as a coach it was fun to watch."

Scotland scored in the 15th minute when American defender Geoff Cameron chested Kenny Miller's header past Tim Howard for an own goal.

The U.S. has won five straight following an 1-4-1 start under Klinsmann, who replaced Bob Bradley after the 4-2 loss to Mexico in last year's Gold Cup final.

Forward Terrence Boyd got his first start for the U.S., which used an attacking 4-3-3 formation. Midfielder Joe Corona entered in the second half for his national team debut. Fabian Johnson was at left back, a position he played for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, paired with Steve Cherundolo on the right.

"Tonight, you saw many elements of what we're always talking about, what we're trying step-by-step to develop," Klinsmann said. "It's a fast-paced game. All those elements I think we saw a lot today. It's obviously a lot more difficult to play that way against Brazil or Italy, but the players they understand more and more what we're trying to achieve. Today, it was really fun to watch."

Clint Dempsey - who has not played together with Donovan under Klinsmann - missed the match while recovering from a groin strain. Jozy Altidore also missed the game because AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands refused to let him report until Monday.

Syria Violence: U.N. Security Council Blames Syrian Government Forces For Shelling Of Houla

UNITED NATIONS ? The U.N. Security Council on Sunday blamed the Syrian government for attacking residential areas of the town of Houla with artillery and tank shelling and also condemned the close-range killings of civilians there ? but avoided saying who was responsible for the massacre of more than 100 men, women and children.

The council said in a press statement after an emergency meeting that the "outrageous use of force" against civilians violated international law and Syrian government commitments under previous U.N. resolutions to stop all violence, including the use of heavy weapons in populated areas. It said "those responsible for acts of violence must be held accountable."

It demanded that the Syrian government immediately halt the use of heavy weapons and pull its troops out of cities and towns, and it asked U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the U.N. observer mission in Syria to continue investigating the attacks in Houla.

Britain and France had proposed issuing a press statement condemning the attack on civilians and pointing the finger at the Syrian government for Friday's massacre. But Russia called for an emergency council meeting saying it first wanted a briefing by Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the unarmed U.N. observer mission.

Russia, which considers Syria its closest Mideast ally, has used its Security Council veto power to block resolutions raising the possibility of U.N. action against President Bashar Assad. The assault on Houla was one of the bloodiest single events in Syria's 15-month uprising against Assad's regime.

Mood told the closed-door council session that U.N. observers, after revisiting the scene, had raised the death toll in Houla to 108 people, U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said outside the council chamber. Those killed include 49 children and 34 women, Ahmad Fawzi, a spokesman for international envoy Kofi Annan, told the AP. Mood said Saturday that observers confirmed from an examination of ordnance found at the scene that artillery and tank shells were fired.

The council statement "condemned in the strongest possible terms the killings, confirmed by United Nations observers, of dozens of men, women and children and the wounding of hundreds more in the village of Houla, near Homs, in attacks that involved a series of government artillery and tank shellings on a residential neighborhood."

It also "condemned the killing of civilians by shooting at close range and by severe physical abuse," but avoided assessing responsibility for the killings. The council asked Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the U.N. observer mission to investigate the attacks and report back to the council.

Before the meeting, Russia's Deputy U.N. Ambassador Alexander Pankin had questioned whether Syrian tanks and artillery were responsible for the killings. He told reporters "there is substantial ground to believe that the majority of those who were killed were either slashed, cut by knives, or executed at point-blank distance."

A press statement is weaker than a presidential statement, which becomes part of the council record, or a legally binding U.N. resolution, but it must be approved by all 15 members and therefore reflects strong Security Council backing.

In a letter to the Security Council, Ban said villages in the Houla area have been outside government control but surrounded by a heavy Syrian military presence.

When U.N. observers visited the area on Saturday, a day after the attacks, Ban said they saw 85 corpses in a mosque in Taldou and "observed shotgun wounds and wounds consistent with artillery fire." He said "the patrol also saw artillery and tank shells, as well as fresh tank tracks" and observed that "many buildings had been destroyed by heavy weapons."

Ban and his predecessor Annan, the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, issued a statement Saturday condemning the "indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force" in violation of international law and Syrian commitments to stop using heavy weapons in populated areas. They demanded that the Syrian government stop using such weapons.

The Syrian government on Sunday denied responsibility for the Houla massacre, blaming the killings on "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" who also attacked soldiers in the area.

Activists from Houla said Saturday that regime forces had shelled the area after large demonstrations against the regime on Friday. That evening, they said, pro-regime fighters known as shabiha stormed the villages, gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

The Houla attacks have sparked outrage from American and other international leaders, and renewed concerns about the relevance of a 6-week-old international peace plan negotiated by Annan that has not stopped almost daily violence despite the presence of more than 250 U.N. observers. The U.N. put the death toll weeks ago at more than 9,000. Hundreds have been killed since.

By Mart T. Tribble

A fixed mortgage is not for everyone, and a VA Hybrid loan helps keep rates flexible and payments low. These allow veterans to gain an advantage from some of the lowest interest rates around. The finance possibility also allows for fixed low rates for the first few years. Those who have thought about an ARM but have been put off by the uncertainty of it can find more benefits in this type of mortgage. Veterans have shown through research and study that their number one need in a mortgage is security of their home. Large repayments are often major worries for vets, as they may not be able to earn the desired amount each month to make these payments. The worry is that once the 3 or 5 years has passed and the plan become subject to changes in interest rates they will be presented with higher than anticipated charges on what they owe. Because it is guaranteed and overseen by the Department of Veterans Affairs, it is kept at a very steady rate. With all of the terminology and terms aside, the VA Hybrid loan is basically a safer deal. It is important, however, to bear in mind the personal financial situation of the debtor when looking at these options. Even so, because the VA has been formed for veterans? rights, all credit arrangements of this type are set to best suit their needs. These options have been tailored to suit the majority of American veterans who want to secure their home with a realistic payment option.

Finding the most applicable loan normally requires some background knowledge of the current market. Those considering a Hybrid agreement will be able to tell if it is right for them by talking with a mortgage advisor.
