Policeman's widow: Punishment for IRA killers weak

(AP) ? The widow of a Northern Ireland policeman has condemned the length of sentences imposed on his Irish Republican Army killers.

Kate Carroll spoke out after a Belfast judge imposed minimum prison terms on the two Continuity IRA men convicted of murdering her husband Stephen in 2009. He was the first officer killed in Northern Ireland since 1998.

Justice Paul Girvan ruled Monday that Brendan McConville should spend 25 years in prison, John Wootton 14 years, before either can apply for parole.

The two men previously were found guilty of shooting Carroll through the back of the head as he sat in his patrol car. His widow noted that Monday's sentences were much shorter than what apply in the rest of the United Kingdom for killing a police officer.
