Websites for international business - Ecademy

Hi Mike,

I think that if you're providing a multi-lingual site it is quite important to provide multi-currency depending on the language selected, however most international sites nowadays sell in whatever their native currency is, and let the payment processor do the conversion to the buyers' local currency.

Over on Virya Software we sell in ? to a world-wide audience, nobody has ever raised it as an issue (products start at ?10 and go up to ?30, ex VAT). The difficulty you might have is making sure the currency conversions are accurate if you're doing it yourself and not using an external system to manage it.

You'll need to consider the VAT regulations if you're dealing with EU companies and you are VAT registered, but not sure if that's the case.

I personally prefer to see prices in my currency but can easily convert using Google to give me an approximate cost if needs be.

Ruth

Hi Ruth
thanks for that.
I know for example on one site, when I changed from ? to $, sales doubles over night - there are parts of the world where they "do not understand ?" so just don't buy.

you are right about VAT & exchange rates, which is what I love about paypal - you can set different prices for each and they take care of the rest.

I just want to get a feel of what people's expectations/ views are on this matter

I trust Paypal about as far as I can throw a one ton truck. Use them at your own risk, You aren't protected by any accessible banking regulators (they are outside FSA jurisdiction) for any transactions they manage for you.

There is a BlackStar discussion on this here >

Hi William
yes I agree - however they do offer much more flexible selling currencies than almost any other provider, without the need for bank accounts in other countries/ curriences.
for example If I want to price in euros or USD - i cannot use Google checkout, or world pay.

I was asking about currencies people sell in - not the safety or otherwise of providers

Worldpay support multiple currencies >.

I aim mostly at the UK so I personally sell in ?'s - I've sold (in ?'s) in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Europe and the States.

Ecademy take ?'s in the UK, Euro's in Europe, Australian Dollars in Australia and $US elsewhere.

that is interesting, as when I spoke to them, this was only possible if you as the vendor had accounts in those currencies.

I'll look.

for those selling in one currency, have you noticed any advantage in offering multiple currencies?

Have an international site.

It takes PayPal and credit cards.

Next phase will be to go to different currencies, but do you add the Euro?

Hi George - it seems you are where I am..
if other currencies why not the euro?At the rate its going it won't be around soonI buy from the US quite a bit and prefer UK ? so I know the real cost helps expedite my finances too
